ESQUIMALT
The VREB district of Esquimalt corresponds to the municipal Township of Esquimalt.
Esquimalt offers a variety of interesting contrasts in lifestyles with an abundance of parks, foreshore vistas and a marina.
Esquimalt has a strong mix of high quality residential properties, some excellent waterfront properties and a very active business community including a light industrial district. It has a well-established community spirit and all of its services were well-developed many years ago. Esquimalt Plaza is one of the main shopping areas although there are a number of commercial businesses all along Esquimalt Road. The major new shopping area is Westside Village Shopping Centre, built to service the number of condos cropping up along the Harbour.
Facing the western approaches from the sea, Esquimalt is a very pleasant and sun-filled location. It is home to the Department of National Defence and headquarters of Canada's Pacific Naval Fleet. Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt employs around 4,000 military and 3,000 civilian personnel, making it a significant contributor to Victoria's economy.
Esquimalt has a full range of recreational facilities including the Esquimalt Recreation Centre with an indoor swimming pool. The Archie Browning Sports Centre with a six-sheet curling rink is nearby. Esquimalt also includes the top-ranked Gorge Vale Golf Club.
There are many excellent parks, several of them on the waterfront or with extensive views of the ocean and Olympic Mountains. The parks include natural areas as well as cultivated areas and sports fields. The West Bay Walkway connects Esquimalt to downtown Victoria via the Johnson Street Bridge and passes through the West Bay Marina. The E&N Rail Trail connects Victoria to the West Shore through Esquimalt. Designated cycling trails criss-cross the municipality.
